Plan your run; Run your plan

As I've mentioned a few days ago, I'm about a month or so deep into marathon training for Ridge to Bridge 2010 edition on Oct 30. I absolutely LIVE for dedicated marathon training cycles like this one because they shake me out of my running doldrums consisting of junk miles and little else. I thrive for the consistency and combinations of training runs that this brings into my schedule.

Realizing this led me to a thought though, and it's this: Does everyone else feel the excitement brought back to life in their running as a result of entering a dedicated training cycle? I mean, I know other runners that seem perfectly content to have a more "leisurely" approach to their regimen. They are more than happy to take each day as it comes, and if they run that day-great. If not, no big deal. If they come across a 5k to register for, super. If not, no big deal.

That type of mentality just doesn't even compute in my pea-sized brain.

I LIVE for racing. Not having a major race on my calendar will banish me to running-for-no-particular-reason-land, and will see my monthly mileage decrease drastically, my overall fitness level decline, and my overall attitude venture toward the "less-than-pleasant-to-live-with".

Just ask my wife. She can tell when I haven't run.

Believe me, she can... :)

I know I'm a tad bit strange when it comes to running, but I can't be alone in this theory...

At least, I don't think I am...

  1. I'm not quite as bad as that, but I do always feel a need to have a race on the calendar. I feel that if I have a race date planned it helps me focus. While I've struggled this year, I like having a written plan to follow. I know I can deviate, but it makes me feel more accountable.
