Foregoing Albany

I'm two days past the marathon now, and I have decided to change my plans for the next couple of races that are soon approaching. In light of the fact that I was able to reach my interim goal in Birmingham last Sunday, I have decided to withdraw from the Albany Marathon, which is scheduled for March 6. While I am certain that I can recover completely and make a sound showing at the race, I think I want to change things around a bit.

Instead of Albany, I am now going to run the ING Georgia Marathon in Atlanta on March 21. This course is pretty similar to Birmingham. There are quite a few hills scattered throughout the 26.2 miles, and I feel that it will be better suited for my fitness, as opposed to the pancake-flat Albany course. Like I said in previous posts, I prefer a somewhat hilly course any day.

One week following the ING Georgia Marathon is the SweetH20 50k trail race outside Atlanta. This will be my first true ultramarathon, and I'm extremely stoked about running it. I became concerned that running Albany and Atlanta both within a time span of 4 weeks would leave my too physically damaged to make a decent showing on the extremely difficult SweetH2O race.  Take a look at the elevation profile - this baby is SICK !!

Just my kind of adventure ;)

  1. Congrats on Mercedes! Ultra, eh? I've got some friends trying to talk me into doing a 50K sometime this year...

  2. Yeah, I've heard you mention in on the podcast a few times. From everything I've been told, if you can run a marathon, you can complete a 50k. It sounds like more of an adventure than a race to me, and I'm definitely looking forward to it.

Since you live in AL, you have quite a few 50k's pretty close by.

  3. Sounds like a solid plan. Glad to hear you're looking forward to the next marathon. Gives me hope that after I do one I might still want to do more :).

An ultra - don't know if I'll ever do that. Although when I was at the Ortho a year and a half ago I said I'd never try a marathon too...Silly me :)!

  4. The one thing I have learned, and you probably already know it, never (and I mean never) say Never!

You'll do one before it's over, I bet you $!
